Description
This plate from John James Audubon's landmark 'Birds of America' series depicts Purple Martins — North America's largest swallow — perched on branches and nesting inside a hanging gourd, rendered with Audubon's characteristic scientific precision and vivid naturalism. The iridescent deep-blue plumage of the male birds contrasts beautifully against the warm tan of the gourd and the pale cream background. Originally engraved and hand-colored by Robert Havell Jr. in London, the 'Birds of America' plates (1827–1838) are celebrated as masterpieces of ornithological illustration and American natural history art.
